We couldn’t devise the most intelligent approach to car ownership without a great team.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a loving family on the South Western Slopes of NSW, the two loves, were cars and motorbikes! I began riding my Honda QR50 at age four, when I would help round up the cattle with the rest of the family who were on much bigger and faster bikes. And as soon as my feet could reach the pedals, I learned how to drive the old farm bomb, a Suzuki Santana. My dad still has the old Suzuki, although four kids later, it’s certainly seen better days.
I had a five year car loan for my 2011 Toyota Corolla which I was two years into when I joined Autopia, and as soon as I discovered the savings to be made with a novated lease, I refinanced the car. I now have a two year novated lease, as I average 24,000kms per year, and I wanted to shorten the term to maximise the resale value, and it’s much more financially beneficial overall.
My first car was a Hyundai Getz. It was a perfect city run-around, a sturdy 4WD and on occasion (well I thought so at the time) as quick as a Porsche, well… it took a while but that little thing could go at some speed on a downhill! It was a gem of a car that I drove around most of Australia, mostly on dirt roads.
My husband and I drove around New Zealand for two weeks with our mountain bikes in 2012, and I’d say this has got to be the best road trip to date. We decided to make it a ‘Top Gear’ Special, by challenging ourselves to find a station wagon for under $900. We ended up with a 1991 Ford Telstar station wagon with 368,000kms for $890.
We managed to get all the way from Auckland to Queenstown and back to Auckland over the fortnight, sleeping in the back of the wagon along the way. At the end of the trip we sold the car for $620. Not a bad way to see New Zealand!
