As part of the UN Women National Committee Australia Tax Appeal, Autopia helped raise almost $60,000. But there is still more to be done.
As proud supporters of the UN Women National Committee Australia we, at Autopia, doubled every dollar donated at tax time, up to $5,000. In total, the UN Women National Committee Australia Tax Appeal raised $57,036.45. This is an outstanding result, but there is always more work to do.
In times of conflict, women and girls are disproportionally affected by conflict. Women and girls are more frequently the targets of violence and sexual exploitation, and are more likely to make up the majority group in displaced and refugee populations.
Each and every dollar you donated made a significant difference to the lives of women and girls in crisis. With your support, UN Women can act quickly when disaster strikes, making sure women and girls get the help they need, right when they need it. Making sure they have the basic necessities such as soap, thermal blankets and sanitary pads; giving women and girls back their dignity, so easily lost in humanitarian disasters.
Hawa, 23, was eight months pregnant when her husband was killed in the fighting in Central African Republic (CAR). Her father and brother were also killed and her mother disappeared, leaving her completely alone. She fled and crossed into Cameroon, becoming a refugee at the Gado camp, where she gave birth to a son, Haphisi Ibrahim.
With donations such as yours, UN Women help empower women to rebuild their lives.
One of over 483,000 refugees who has fled violence in Central African Republic (CAR), Hawa received counselling and livelihood training from UN Women at the Safe Centre in the camp. “When I arrived I didn’t have anyone,” she said. “They sensitized and trained me on how to do a business plan at the camp.”
